Died 28 October 1944. While cleaning his grenades in preparation of the assault on Walcheren at the billet in Wenduyne, Belgium, Mne. Ashcroft accidentally pulled the pin off one of them and couldn't get it back in. To protect others on the room he threw himself on top of the grenade which killed him.
