Service Number: CH/X106295
(2908)
Killed in action 17 July 1944.
Although the family surname is actually Currie-Smith, Tommy dropped the hyphen (as he didn't want to appear posh, even though from a very poor working class Islington family), and would have been known to his comrades as plain Tom or Tommy Smith. This spelling carried through to both his grave in Ranville War Cemetery and to his entry on the new Normandy Memorial where he is inscribed as "T W C Smith".
