(*Military Cross). Major Walton had been the most senior Troop Commander since the death of Major Feacey on D-Day. He was an officer with a remarkably good judgement in any situation.
Died on 4 September 1944 due to the tragic incident in which the jeep Major Walton was driving had struck a German mine. His passenger Captain Stickings of Q troop was badly injured. This incident happened on one of the approach roads to le Havre, which was still in German hands. It was their policy to deny us use of the Channel ports in order to cause us supply problems. Major Walton had mistakenly thought that the enthusiastically waving villagers were showing friendliness when in fact they were trying to warn him of the minefield.
This sad incident precipitated a serious shortage of commissioned officers in the Commando.
