Born P. Tischler. He was an Austrian and his father was a friend of the Duke of Windsor. Sometime after the Anschluss his father was arrested by the Gestapo along with his young son then aged 14 yrs. Seyss-Inquart, the new Nazi Chancellor of Austria had been a patient of Terry's father and father and son were soon released. The Duke of Windsor then played a part in facilitating the escape of Terry and his father to England. As soon as young Terry reached the age when he could join the British army he did so (in 1943). He was originally assigned to a unit of the Pioneer (labour) Corps consisting largely of refugees who undertook labouring duties under close supervision as an alternative to internĀ­ment. Terry' s ambition ,was to join a fighting unit of the British Army and in due course, after many frustrations, he realised his ambition. He was accepted for commando service as a member of 10 (Inter Allied) Commando. Just before D-Day he was seconded to 47 RM Commando3.
